New Work

regional

While Curious has built a reputation on producing Regional Premieres for Denver audiences, producing World Premieres is also central to our vision. We are committed to supporting the creation, development, and continued life of new plays for the American theatre, and we are proud to be the only professional theatre in Denver actively engaged in all levels of this process.

While we will strive to continue bringing Denver audiences Regional Premieres of the best new plays, we are also committed to developing ongoing relationships with playwrights, and to providing development and production opportunities to emerging as well as the established voices in contemporary theatre.

We aim to create an environment that supports and sustains the valuable work of American playwrights. From playwrights all across the country, we hear the same thing: getting a first production is much easier than a second or a third production.

Curious' objective regarding new work is therefore twofold: to work to identify and develop world premieres of scripts; and to seek to identify previously produced important new scripts for subsequent productions.

World Premieres

In the case of world premieres, we will work closely with the playwrights on the nurturing and preparation of their plays for production.

Praying for Rain
The Rest of the Night
Paris on the Platte
The Dead Guy
The War Anthology
tempOdyssey
A House WIth No Walls
Mall*Mart: The Musical!

Subsequent Productions

Equally important to the future of American theatre is the playwright's process of developing a script after the initial production, a process often vital to the play's future success. Securing a second or third production provides the playwright with deeper insights into their work. The added perspective allows for fuller development of the script after the initial draft, and thus greater potential for future production.

Formalizing Our Committment

Curious is committed to supporting the extended life and development of America's significant established and emerging playwrights. To this end, we have taken several critical steps:

  • We have recently added a newly-created Literary Manager/ Dramaturg position within our company, who will focus exclusively on our commitment to new work.

nnpn

  • We have joined the National New Play Network, an alliance of professional theatres that advocates ’creative cooperation, and facilitates the exchange of new works and new ways of working among theatres across America.

  • We have formalized our new play commitment through a reading series in an attempt to seek out provocative new works, and to act as a testing ground for Curious audiences and company members to offer impressions and feedback.

Over the past eight years, Curious's commitment to new work has continually evolved. As a mid-size theatre with a commitment to professional standards of production, Curious is in a position to become the theatre for new work in Denver.

Script Submissions

Due to the vast number of scripts we receive each season, Curious Theatre Company has found it necessary to adopt the following policy:

If interested in contacting Curious about submitting your play or musical, we recommend you look at our production history to get a good sense of the kind of material we produce.

Curious does not accept unsolicited scripts and is not responsible for returning material it receives which it did not request. Agent submissions are accepted.
