BLACK. was written by Lamaria Aminah as a part of the 2016 Curious New Voices Summer Intensive. Lamaria’s first play, BLACK was born of her involvement with Black Lives Matter 5280 and her desire to articulate a common problem she saw in our country – we don’t know how to talk about race.

The play was so successful in sparking conversation, Curious took the piece to the Colorado Thespian Festival where hundreds of young theatremakers had an intense and important experience. The play opened doors to conversation among classmates and provided a safe platform for discussion.

We are thrilled to have renowned director and activist donnie l. betts at the helm of this artistic team. He has guided the play and provided a unique and thoughtful voice and facilitation to post-show discussions.

After one more young black man dies at the hands of police, a community is shaken. A conversation evolves between two mothers at the vigil – one white and one black. Through their interaction, BLACK. gets to the heart of the matter on communication between races.
Stay after the performance for a robust community discussion led by donnie l. betts, renowned black artist and activist.
